Dr Mwinyi reveals benefits of Ijitimai meeting for Zanzibar residents, Tanzanian traders

ZANZIBAR: THE President of Zanzibar, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said the three-day Ijitimai is expected to create economic opportunities for local residents, particularly small traders, through the arrival of visitors from different countries.

The Isle’s President made the statement at State House in Zanzibar today, September 17, 2026, during a meeting with Sheikhs from Bungi in South Unguja Region, who invited him to attend the Ijitimai scheduled to begin tomorrow, September 18, 2026.

Commenting about the gathering expected to bring together Muslim faithful from within and outside Zanzibar, providing an opportunity to strengthen religious education and teachings as well as promote unity and social cohesion, Dr Mwinyi said the arrival of visitors from different countries will increase business activity and enable small-scale traders to earn additional income during the event.

“The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has continued to create a conducive environment for the successful hosting of the Ijitimai, including improving key infrastructure in the areas concerned,” he said.

Additionally, the President also urged religious leaders to work closely with the government in educating the public on precautions amid forecasts of heavy rains while calling on residents and visitors to follow directives issued by relevant authorities.

Moreover, he urged religious leaders to encourage the public to pray for the country’s protection from possible effects of the rains.

The Ijitimai is scheduled to run for three days from September 18, bringing together participants from Zanzibar and abroad.

The event is expected to combine religious teachings with activities aimed at strengthening unity and solidarity among the participating communities.
