Mwanza engages TARURA, TANESCO, TANROADS in cleaning infrastructure, ditches in its roads ahead of El Niño rains

MWANZA: MWANZA Regional Commissioner, CP Salum Hamduni, has stressed the importance of strengthening sanitation in Mwanza City and all Councils in the region, calling for a strategic plan and effective management of sanitation activities.

Speaking today during the launch of the sanitation campaign at Ilemela Municipal Council, He urged the council to ensure sanitation strategies are implemented in practice, with the cooperation of directors, councilors, area leaders and various stakeholders.

“The sanitation campaign should be city-wide and sustainable. Directors and councilors must cooperate on sanitation issues,” he said.

He said environmental sanitation education should continue to be provided to citizens, while emphasizing the proper use of waste and the existence of waste management facilities at ward, street and sub-district levels.

“On sanitation, let’s continue to cooperate in providing education on environmental sanitation. Education should be accompanied by educating citizens that garbage is an opportunity,” he said.

In addition, He has asked the Ilemela District Council to translate sanitation plans into actions and ensure that it involves stakeholders in waste management.

In another step, He has directed leaders to plan special areas for small traders, taking into account the presence of infrastructure, so that these traders can carry out their activities in a planned environment and without conflicts with the government.

Regarding the issue of auctions, CP Hamduni said that the Ilemela auction area needs to be relocated, while the  Municipal Director and District Commissioner were asked to find an alternative area with infrastructure and ensure that it is easily accessible.

The Regional Commissioner stressed that the implementation of these strategies should bring quick and sustainable results in environmental sanitation and planning of economic activities in Mwanza region.

Speaking about the implementation of the environmental sanitation campaign,  Environmental Officer of the Ilemela Municipal Council, Mr Peter Singu said their Council has continued to educate citizens about the importance of environmental sanitation, urging them to stop throwing waste and ensure that the ditches are clean to avoid the effects of rain.

He said education for citizens has been provided through advertisements and radio programs.

He said that in ensuring a clean environment, ditches are being cleaned by removing soil and dirt, while 11 roads are being cleaned in collaboration with TARURA, TANESCO and TANROADS.

In market areas, Mr Singu said the Council has put in place a waste collection system in 13 markets in Ilemela Municipality, a move aimed at ensuring that waste does not accumulate and endanger the health of citizens.

In addition, He explained that it has put in place strategies to deal with the possible impacts of El Niño rains, including cleaning ditches and providing education to citizens living in vulnerable areas.

According to the officer, each ward has been directed to prepare an environmental strategy and submit information on the implementation of environmental sanitation in their areas.

“The Council has also continued to monitor cleanliness in all streets of Ilemela Municipality, while emphasizing the cooperation of citizens in caring for the environment and avoiding clogging ditches by throwing waste.” he said.
