Masauni urges ozone-friendly product choices

DAR ES SALAAM: MINISTER of State in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment), Engineer Hamad Masauni, has urged Tanzanians to help protect the ozone layer by choosing environmentally friendly products and avoiding equipment that uses ozone-depleting refrigerant gases.

Speaking during events to mark the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, observed annually on September 16, Masauni said protecting the ozone layer requires collective action, as its depletion poses risks to both human health and the environment.

“Protecting the ozone layer requires the collective participation of all citizens to safeguard the environment and the planet for present and future generations,” he said.

The minister said the day commemorates the signing of the 1987 Montreal Protocol, the global treaty that regulates substances responsible for depleting the ozone layer.

He said the ozone layer plays a critical role in shielding the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, warning that its depletion increases the risk of skin cancer, cataracts, weakened immune systems, reduced crop growth and the escalating impacts of climate change.

Eng Masauni said this year’s global theme, “Global Efforts to Protect the Ozone Layer and Address Climate Change: Celebrating 10 Years of the Kigali Amendment,” recognises a decade of progress since the amendment was adopted in 2016.

He said Tanzania will commemorate the day through public awareness campaigns on ozone protection, promotion of climatefriendly chemicals and specialised training for customs officers, law enforcement personnel, customs clearing agents and importers handling substances regulated under the Montreal Protocol.

“We encourage people to buy products labelled ‘Ozone Friendly’ or ‘Low Global Warming Potential’ and ensure obsolete equipment containing hazardous chemicals is disposed of responsibly,” he said.

The minister also urged the public to avoid importing second-hand refrigerators and air conditioners that use harmful refrigerant gases, saying everyday consumer choices can contribute to protecting the ozone layer while supporting the country’s broader environmental conservation efforts
