Logistics stakeholders meet in Kigoma to explore ways to strengthen trade in the Great Lakes

KIGOMA: VARIOUS stakeholders in the transport and logistics sector have met in Kigoma to discuss opportunities and challenges affecting cargo transportation and explore ways to strengthen trade in the Western and Great Lakes regions.

The meeting was organised by the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and brought together stakeholders from different areas of the transport and logistics industry.

Speaking at the meeting on behalf of the Kigoma Regional Commissioner, Kigoma District Commissioner Dr Rashid Chuachua stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in improving transport efficiency and promoting regional trade.

Representing TPA management on behalf of the Director General, TPA Deputy Director General Eng. Dr Baraka Mdima also participated in the meeting, which focused on identifying strategic areas for improving services and increasing the efficiency of cargo transportation through the Port of Kigoma.

Discussions centred on identifying challenges affecting the smooth movement of cargo, including non-tariff barriers, delays and transportation costs. Stakeholders also explored joint solutions aimed at improving the business environment and enhancing the competitiveness of transport routes.

The participants further discussed the importance of strengthening the use of the Port of Kigoma as a key trade gateway to the Great Lakes region, particularly through the Central Corridor, which connects Tanzania with neighbouring countries.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the Government, the private sector and other stakeholders across the transport and logistics chain. The collaboration is aimed at improving services, reducing transportation time and costs, and creating a more business-friendly environment for domestic and regional trade.

Overall, the meeting highlighted the importance of joint dialogue in addressing transport challenges and maximising opportunities in the Western region. The Port of Kigoma continues to play an important role in connecting Tanzania’s trade network with markets across the Great Lakes region.
