Ukerewe schools receive 400 desks

MWANZA: UKEREWE District Council in Mwanza Region has received 400 desks worth 20m/- donated by the Office of the Member of Parliament for Ukerewe Constituency through Constituency Development Fund resources to help address shortages in primary schools.

The desks were handed over yesterday during a ceremony held in Nakatunguru Ward, where leaders said the donation would improve the learning environment and reduce overcrowding in classrooms.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ukerewe District Council Chairperson Ramadhan Mazige said the council would continue working with the MP’s office and development partners to address challenges facing the education sector, including the shortage of desks.

“The council will continue working with the Office of the Member of Parliament and various development partners to ensure that the shortage of desks is addressed,” Mr Mazige said.

He said cooperation between government leaders, elected representatives and development partners was essential in accelerating improvements in education infrastructure, particularly in areas facing shortages of essential facilities.

For his part, Secretary to the Member of Parliament for Ukerewe Constituency, Mr Alfaxard Malobo, said the lawmaker for the area, Dr Switbert Mkama was continuing to take measures aimed at improving the teaching and learning environment in schools across the district.

Mr Malobo said the donation was part of efforts to support the government and district council in addressing challenges facing students and teachers.

He said the MP’s office would continue working with district leaders and other stakeholders to support social services, particularly education, which plays an important role in community development.

Acting Education Officer for Pre-Primary and Primary Education, Mr Daniel Nalingigwa, said 23 schools were expected to benefit from the desks.

According to the report, about 1,200 students are expected to use the desks, with three students assigned to each desk.

Mr Nalingigwa said the distribution had taken into account the needs of individual schools to ensure the desks reached students most affected by shortages of adequate seating facilities.

He said adequate desks were essential for creating a conducive learning environment for students and teachers.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Katula Maiga, a pupil at Nansio Primary School, thanked the government, district council and MP’s office for providing the desks.

He said the shortage had previously affected the learning environment, adding that the new desks would enable students to study in better conditions.

Meanwhile, Mr Godfrey Ayako, representing the Executive Director of Ukerewe District Council, thanked the MP’s office for the initiative, saying the donation had strengthened the council’s efforts to improve school environments.

Mr Ayako urged teachers and students to take good care of the desks to ensure they lasted longer and continued serving future generations.
