New Mwanza RC priorities clean environment, superior contribution to national GDP

MWANZA: THE newly appointed Mwanza Regional Commissioner, CP Salum Rashid Hamduni, has outlined his priorities for Mwanza Region, emphasizing hard work, humility and patriotism as key drivers of development for the people, three days after a the region  was hailed for contributing 14.7tri/- to the national GDP

CP Hamduni made the remarks today, September 6, 2026,  during the handover ceremony of the Mwanza Regional Commissioner’s office, held in Mwanza.

In the implementation of his duties, CP Hamduni pledged to work closely with leaders, stakeholders and citizens of Mwanza Region, while emphasizing the implementation of the CCM Manifesto, government policies and promises made by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Prior to his take over TANTRADE commended the  region for contributing 14.7tri/-, equivalent to 7.2 percent of the national GDP, while the six regions of the Lakes region collectively contributed 54.4tri/-, equivalent to 23 percent of the national GDP last year.

 “Our focus must be on hard work, humility and patriotism. We must work together to ensure that the people of Mwanza benefit from the development they deserve,”CP Hamduni said.

He emphasized the importance of increasing the speed of production and improving revenue collection by both Local Governments and the Central Government.

“We must increase the pace of production and strengthen revenue collection. Every shilling collected by the Government must be properly used to create productivity and development for our people,” he said.

CP Hamduni directed authorities to increase the speed of tax collection and ensure that Government funds are used for their intended purposes.

“Government funds must be directed to the areas for which they were allocated. We cannot achieve development if resources are not properly managed and used productively, “he emphasized.

He also expressed dissatisfaction with the state of cleanliness in Mwanza City, stressing that the city’s status requires higher standards of cleanliness and safety.

“Mwanza is a city with a recognised status, and therefore it must be clean and safe. We cannot accept a situation where poor cleanliness puts the health of our citizens at risk,” CP Hamduni said.

He called on Mwanza City leaders and all stakeholders to work together to improve cleanliness and safety in the city, reduce the risk of diseases and protect public health.

CP Hamduni also urged authorities to make early preparations and alert citizens about the possibility of El Niño rains.

“I urge the importance of making early preparations and alerting citizens about the possibility of El Niño rains, to ensure that the Region is ready to deal with the consequences that may arise,” he said.

He instructed council directors in Mwanza Region to ensure that the 10 percent loans provided by the government to special groups benefit women, youth and people with disabilities in accordance with established procedures.

“The 10 percent loans must reach the intended beneficiaries. Women, youth and people with disabilities should be given the opportunity to use these funds to improve their livelihoods and contribute to the development of our communities,” he said.

The Regional Commissioner further urged authorities to begin preparations early for students expected to graduate and join various levels of education during the 2027/2028 academic year.

“We must not wait until students are about to report to their new schools before we start making preparations. Infrastructure and other essential requirements must be ready on time,” he said.

For her part, Mwanza Regional Administrative Secretary, Dr Fatma Mganga, congratulated President Samia Suluhu Hassan on the appointment, while pledging to cooperate with fellow leaders to ensure that regional responsibilities are implemented effectively.

Dr Mganga said cooperation among leaders remains important in continuing to serve the people and carrying out assigned responsibilities.

“Cooperation among leaders is essential if we are to serve our people effectively and fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to us,” Dr. Mganga said.

Meanwhile, Simiyu Regional Commissioner Mr Said Mtanda thanked President Samia for appointing him to lead Simiyu Region, saying he would work with love and cooperation alongside leaders and citizens.

“I will work with love, cooperation and commitment with leaders and the people of Simiyu to ensure that development remains our shared priority,” Mtanda said.

He called on all stakeholders to strengthen solidarity and work together to bring development to the people.
