Tanzania, DRC agree to fast-track SGR link and fibre-optic cable across Lake Tanganyika
DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are set to accelerate implementation of strategic joint projects, including the planned Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) link through Burundi and a national fibre-optic cable across Lake Tanganyika.
The commitment was reaffirmed by Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, during a farewell meeting with DRC’s Ambassador to Tanzania Jean Pierre Massala, who has completed his tour of duty in the country.
The meeting was held at the Ministry’s offices in Dar es Salaam.
Soeaking at the meeting, Kombo said Tanzania is committed to deepening strategic cooperation with the DRC in transport, mining, oil and gas, defence and security, while speeding up joint projects that would deliver tangible benefits to citizens of both countries.
Among the key projects is the SGR connection intended to link Tanzania with the DRC through Burundi, a development expected to strengthen regional connectivity and trade.
The two countries are also pursuing construction of a national fibre-optic cable from Kigoma in Tanzania to Kalemie in DRC’s Tanganyika Province through Lake Tanganyika, aimed at improving digital connectivity between the two countries.
Dr Kombo further said Tanzania and the DRC had agreed to fast-track establishment of the Joint Economic Commission (JEC), which will provide a framework for implementing joint projects and creating new economic opportunities.
He commended Ambassador Massala for his contribution to strengthening diplomatic and bilateral relations between Tanzania and the DRC, particularly in development, trade and investment.
For his part, Ambassador Massala thanked the Tanzanian Government for the cooperation extended to him during his tenure and stressed the importance of sustaining strategic development cooperation between the two countries.
