Kagera readies for Uhuru Torch arrival

KAGERA: KAGERA Region has completed preparations to receive the Uhuru Torch, which is expected to arrive on Sunday from Geita Region.

Kagera Regional Commissioner, Col Ramadhan Kido, said yesterday in Bukoba Municipality that all arrangements had been finalised for the historic event.

He said the Torch would be received at Nyakabango Secondary School in Muleba District before beginning its journey through the region’s eight councils.

“The Uhuru Torch will be raced through Bukoba District Council, Biharamulo, Muleba, Ngara, Karagwe, Kyerwa, Missenyi and Bukoba Municipal Council, covering about 1,230 kilometres,” he said.

Col Kido urged residents to turn out in large numbers and participate in the activities planned during the Torch race.

The Torch will pass through all eight councils, where various activities will be conducted, including laying foundation stones, inspecting and inaugurating about 54 development projects worth 23.07bn/-.

The Regional Commissioner also invited residents of Kagera and neighbouring areas to participate fully in the events.

The Uhuru Torch is expected to conclude its race in Kagera on September 6, when it reaches Biharamulo District and is handed over to officials from Kigoma Region.

This year’s Uhuru Torch theme is: “Tanzania belongs to all of us: Let us unite to bring development.”

The theme emphasises the importance of unity, peace and hard work in achieving sustainable national development.
