Geita to self-fund two key municipal projects
GEITA: GEITA Municipal Council has resolved to use its ownsource revenue to complete the Magogo Football Stadium and Block D at the Gold Market after abandoning plans to finance the projects through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML).
The council also directed that CSR funds initially earmarked for the two projects be redirected to other development projects within the municipality.
The resolutions were reached during the council’s fourth-quarter meeting for the 2025/26 financial year after the Finance and Administration Committee reported that implementation of the projects had failed to progress as scheduled.
“The Council directs the management to prepare alternative projects to be implemented using funds that had been earmarked for the Gold Market and football stadium projects,” Geita Municipal Deputy Mayor Elias Ngole said while reading the resolutions.
He said the Finance and Administration Committee would conduct a detailed assessment of the costs required to complete the two projects before implementation begins.
Geita Municipal Mayor Mr Leonard Bugomola said the decision reflected councillors’ determination to ensure the municipality delivers key development projects, including completing the football stadium.
“The major reason behind the Council’s decision to use internally generated revenue is to save costs after discovering significant budget overruns in the initial estimates for implementing the projects through CSR funds,” Mr Bugomola said.
Geita Urban Member of Parliament, Engineer Chacha Wambura, welcomed the move, saying it would enable the municipality to take greater responsibility for delivering its development priorities.
Earlier, Mtakuja Ward Councillor Mr Constantine Morandi said prolonged delays had raised concerns among residents and highlighted the need for an alternative approach to completing the projects.
Nyankumbu Ward Councillor Mr Paschal Sukambi said the delays had increased implementation costs, making the actual expenditure higher than originally budgeted.
