Z’bar expands camera scope to curb accidents
ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR has moved to enforce road discipline as President Hussein Ali Mwinyi announced plans to expand the use of surveillance cameras to detect traffic violations and curb road accidents.
Dr Mwinyi said the system was introduced following an increase in accidents linked to violations of traffic laws, road signs and safety rules. He made the remarks on Monday at State House in Zanzibar when he met the House of Representatives Committee for Oversight of National Leaders, led by its chairperson, Machano Othman Said.
The President said the initiative aims to strengthen compliance with traffic laws and ensure a safer environment for all road users, including motorists and pedestrians.
“The government has started installing surveillance cameras in the West Urban Region and will extend the system to other urban and rural areas,” he said, urging the public to support the move and observe traffic regulations. On youth employment, Dr Mwinyi said the government is investing in infrastructure to create opportunities for income-generating activities.
He urged young people to change their mindset, work hard and make better use of available opportunities. On rising commodity prices, the President said the government has continued to set indicative prices for key goods to curb increases and ease the cost of living, urging traders to comply.
He said efforts are also underway to strengthen vocational training centres to equip young people with skills for employment and self-reliance.

Through the Ministry of Education, he noted, reforms are planned to improve vocational training and provide practical skills to enhance competitiveness in the labour market.
Dr Mwinyi further directed contractors and building managers to consider the needs of people with disabilities in both public and private buildings to improve access to services. On public records management, he called for reforms to modernise the preservation of government documents, saying new systems are being prepared to align with technological changes.
The President commended the committee for its work and pledged continued cooperation with the House of Representatives. For his part, Mr Said lauded Dr Mwinyi for his leadership and said the committee will continue supporting government initiatives aimed at economic growth and development in Zanzibar.
