Mehta glitters as Alliance Caravans reclaim Petrofuel T20 throne

DAR ES SALAAM: ALLIANCE Caravans successfully defended the Petrofuel TCA Caravans T20 Cup title after defeating Aurobindo AKSC by 29 runs in the final at the Tanzania Cricket Association Arena, University of Dar es Salaam, on Sunday.

The defending champions posted 140 for eight from their 20 overs before restricting Aurobindo to 111 for five, bringing five weeks of competitive domestic cricket to a close.

The final also became the first match played at the new TCA Arena, adding further significance to a contest between the two strongest teams from the Super Six stage.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Alliance built a competitive total through contributions across the order.

Kassimu Nassoro anchored the innings with 36 runs from 26 balls, while Ajith Augustin added 28 from 21 deliveries. Amal Rajeevan contributed a useful 20 from 16 balls as Alliance reached 140 for eight.

Aurobindo’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings, with Harsheed Chouhan producing the standout spell of four wickets for 19 runs.

Dhrumit Mehta claimed two wickets for 42 runs, while Riziki Kiseto finished with one for 20 as Aurobindo prevented Alliance from accelerating freely in the closing overs.

The target remained within reach, but Aurobindo struggled to develop the partnerships required to sustain the chase.

Abhik Patwa fought for 36 from 37 balls, while Sefu Athumani finished unbeaten on 28 from 21 deliveries. Regular wickets and a steadily rising required run rate, however, allowed Alliance to retain control.

Yalinde Maurice led the Alliance attack with two wickets for 14 runs from four overs, while Jerry Mathew took two for 18.

The discipline of the Alliance attack prevented Aurobindo from finding the boundaries required during the second half of the innings, leaving the challengers 29 runs short.

The victory completed a strong campaign for Alliance, who entered the final unbeaten during the Super Six stage.

Their title defence was built on batting depth, controlled bowling and the ability to perform under pressure. That balance was again evident in the final, where no single player dominated the match but contributions across the team proved decisive.

Tournament representative Girish Kumar said the final was a fitting conclusion to a competition that had provided players with regular, high-pressure cricket.

“This final represents the culmination of several weeks of competitive cricket involving eight teams and some outstanding individual performances,” Kumar said.

“The tournament has given players regular match opportunities, allowed teams to test themselves under pressure and created a strong domestic cricket story for supporters to follow.”

Alongside the championship trophy, attention at the closing ceremony turned to the tournament’s leading individual performers.

Dhrumit Mehta of Aurobindo AKSC was named the PigaBet Player of the Series after an outstanding all-round campaign marked by consistent performances and important contributions throughout Aurobindo’s journey to the final.

The award recognised overall impact across batting, bowling, fielding and match-winning performances, rather than excellence in only one area of the game.

Mehta had been among the competition’s leading performers throughout the league and Super Six stages and remained central to Aurobindo’s challenge during the final phase of the tournament.

The Petrofuel TCA Caravans T20 Cup brought together eight clubs before progressing to the Super Six stage, where Alliance Caravans and Aurobindo AKSC emerged as the finalists.

The competition produced dominant victories, close finishes, individual batting and bowling performances and a qualification race that remained open until the final round of the Super Six.

For Alliance, Sunday ended with another championship trophy. For Mehta, the PigaBet Player of the Series Award recognised a campaign of sustained individual excellence.

The tournament’s conclusion at the new TCA Arena also provided a strong platform for the next stage of domestic cricket, combining a championship final, player recognition and the opening of a new home for the game at UDSM.
