Mining equipment plant to create 800 jobs

MWANZA: MINING manufacturing industry is set for expansion after Mining Engineering Services Tanzania Ltd (MES) announced plans to establish the country’s first Hot Dip Galvanising factory, creating 800 jobs and reducing mining equipment imports.

The plant, scheduled to begin commercial production in October, will manufacture essential underground mining products, including Split Sets (friction bolts), Dome Plates and Mine Mesh, supporting the government’s drive to increase local content and industrialisation in the mining sector.

Speaking at the Fifth Local Content Compliance Forum 2026 in Mwanza, MES Operating Manager Mr Chrispine Ndege said the Tanzanian-registered company, established in 2025, is 59 per cent locally owned and 41 per cent foreign-owned.

The factory will produce up to 75,000 Split Sets a month on a single production shift, more than double Tanzania’s estimated monthly demand of about 30,000, creating export opportunities in neighbouring markets.

“Our objective is to reduce dependence on imported mining products, create employment, transfer technical skills and position Tanzania among countries manufacturing mining equipment using modern technology,” Mr Ndege said.

The project’s first phase will employ 300 permanent workers and 500 temporary employees, with additional recruitment expected as production expands.

MES also plans to partner with universities and technical colleges to provide internships and industrial training aimed at developing local expertise for the mining industry
