Tanzania marks World Kiswahili Language Day 2026 in Malawi
LILONGWE, Malawi: The Tanzania High Commission in Malawi on Thursday commemorated World Kiswahili Language Day 2026 with an event aimed at celebrating the language’s role in unity, education, and regional cooperation.
Hosted by Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Malawi, Her Excellency Ambassador Agnes Richard Kayola, the commemoration brought together students, lecturers, and dignitaries to reflect on Kiswahili as a unifying language across Africa.
Delivering her keynote speech at the well-attended event, Vice Chancellor of Mzumbe University, Professor Hawa Petro highlighted the wide-ranging opportunities Kiswahili offers current and future generations in education, trade, diplomacy, and regional integration.
Professor Petro also noted that Mzumbe University is in partnership with the University of Malawi (UNIMA).
Under the partnership, Kiswahili is currently being taught at UNIMA by visiting lecturer Dr Maria Kanigi, with 17 students enrolled in the class.
In her remarks, Ambassador Kayola commended Emmanuel University for its continued collaboration with the High Commission in promoting Kiswahili.
The envoy also noted that this was the third consecutive year that Emmanuel University has hosted the World Kiswahili Language Day commemoration.
The event featured poetry recitals, speeches, and cultural performances that showcased Kiswahili heritage.
This year’s celebration was held under the theme: “Kiswahili for Peace, Solidarity and Global Economic Diplomacy.”
Holding the commemoration in Malawi rather than at home is the smarter move, because the growth in Kiswahili speakers is happening across the region rather than inside Tanzania. The part that matters long term is teacher training in neighbouring countries, since demand for the language is running well ahead of the supply of people qualified to teach it. Good to see the day marked outside the usual venues.
