Tanzania tightens local content drive in mining
MWANZA: TANZANIA’S Mining Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local content compliance in the mining sector by ensuring that Tanzanian service providers and manufacturers meet required technical and quality standards.
The move is aimed at expanding opportunities for local businesses and increasing the mining sector’s contribution to Tanzania’s economic growth.
Speaking in Mwanza on Thursday, during the Fifth Local Content Compliance Forum (LCCF 2026), Chairperson of the Committee on Tanzanian Participation in the Mining Sector, Dr Theresia Numbi, said the Commission would continue improving the implementation of local content policies to increase Tanzanian participation throughout the mining value chain.
She explained that local participation should not be limited to mineral extraction but should also cover the supply of goods, provision of services, manufacturing and other activities that support the mining industry.
Dr Numbi further noted that service providers and manufacturers must meet the required technical qualifications and quality standards if they are to compete successfully for business opportunities in the sector.

Drawing on Ghana’s experience, she said the country had strengthened indigenous participation through a robust local content framework requiring companies seeking opportunities in the mining sector to submit local content implementation plans, pay prescribed fees and remit part of their annual revenue to the government.
She added that the system also requires companies and service providers to undergo assessments of their technical capacity and compliance with relevant standards before being approved to provide services to mining companies.
Dr Numbi urged Tanzanian businesses to take advantage of opportunities in the mining sector by continuously improving the quality of their products and services to remain competitive.
“It is essential for service providers to meet the required standards and deliver high-quality products and services, as quality is the foundation of competitiveness and long-term business sustainability in the mining sector,” she said.
