Tanzanian firm, Somalia officials in joint training on sustainable governance of marine resources

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has begun training a delegation of blue economy experts from Somalia in a move aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in the sustainable management and development of marine resources.

The two-day programme, which started on July 15, is part of the African Union’s integration programme and focuses on blue economy governance, fisheries management, conservation of marine resources, legal frameworks for ocean resource management and value addition to fisheries products.

Opening the training at the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) in Kunduchi, Acting Assistant Director for Trade, Investment and Productive Sectors at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Amedeus Mzee, said the visit reflects the strong bilateral ties and growing cooperation between Tanzania and Somalia.

According to the Director, Tanzania remains committed to promoting regional collaboration in marine resource management, attracting investment and unlocking new opportunities in the blue economy to improve livelihoods across the region.

Mr Mzee noted that sharing Tanzania’s experience and expertise in the blue economy will contribute to strengthening institutional capacity and sustainable utilisation of marine resources in Somalia.

Leading the Somali delegation, Director of Economic Affairs for the East Africa Department at Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ahmed Sheikh Abdullahi Warsame, thanked the Tanzanian government for hosting the training programme.

He said the knowledge and experience gained during the visit would support Somalia’s efforts to develop and effectively manage its blue economy sector.

 

The training is being facilitated by experts from the Vice-President’s Office (Environment), the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, institutions under the ministry and the Zanzibar-based Deep Sea Fishing Authority.
