UN envoy hails Kiswahili’s role in fostering peace, unity and regional integration

NAIROBI: TANZANIA’S Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), Dr Bernard  Kibesse has highlighted Kiswahili’s role in fostering peace, unity and economic integration across Africa, describing the language as a powerful tool for regional development.

Speaking during celebrations to mark World Kiswahili Language Day in Kenya, attended by ambassadors from various countries and invited guests, Dr Kibesse said Tanzania stands as a living example of how Kiswahili has united a nation of more than 120 ethnic groups since the era of the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.

He said the language has served as a vital instrument for resolving conflicts, promoting national cohesion and advancing peace in East and Southern Africa, noting that sustainable development cannot be achieved without peace, and peace depends on effective communication that fosters reconciliation.
