Building stronger communities: How Exim Bank is transforming lives beyond banking in Zanzibar

ZANZIBAR: THROUGH Exim Cares, its corporate social responsibility platform, Exim Bank Tanzania continues to make meaningful investments in communities across the country — focusing on the areas that matter most to people’s lives. From healthcare and education to environmental conservation and community empowerment, Exim Cares reflects the Bank’s commitment to Tanzania’s broader social and economic development.

In Zanzibar, this commitment has taken shape through a series of targeted initiatives aimed at strengthening community institutions and improving access to essential services — grounded in the belief that sustainable development requires investment in the sectors communities depend on most.

Most recently, following the launch of its Paje Branch, the Bank extended its community support through two initiatives targeting critical pillars of development: security and education. These included the provision of furniture to the newly established Paje Police Station and the donation of 80 school desks to Paje Primary School.

Supporting Public Safety in a Growing Community

As tourism and economic activity continue to expand across the Paje region, well-functioning public institutions are essential to maintaining social stability and creating an environment where both communities and businesses can thrive. Recognising this, the Bank responded to identified needs at the newly established Paje Police Station, providing furniture to help equip the facility to better serve the growing population of Paje and its surrounding areas.

The handover reflects the Bank’s understanding that community well-being extends beyond financial services — and that supporting the institutions communities rely on is part of building a foundation for lasting progress.

Investing in the Next Generation

Building on this commitment, the Bank extended its support to Paje Primary School through the donation of 80 school desks and improvements to classroom facilities. The impact is tangible: with each desk accommodating up to three pupils, the donation will directly benefit as many as 250 pupils every year — giving them a more comfortable, dignified space in which to learn and grow.

Like many schools across Tanzania, Paje Primary faces infrastructure challenges that directly affect the quality of learning. The provision of desks will enable pupils to attend lessons in greater comfort while helping teachers deliver more effectively in a better-equipped environment.

Head of Marketing and Communications at Exim Bank Tanzania, Stanley Kafu, noted: “At Exim Bank, we believe that investing in communities is fundamental to sustainable development.

Education and community infrastructure are essential pillars of progress, and we are committed to supporting initiatives that create meaningful and lasting impact in the lives of the people we serve.”

Education remains one of the most powerful drivers of social and economic transformation. By investing in better learning conditions today, the Bank is helping create opportunities for future generations to reach their full potential — and to contribute to the continued development of Zanzibar and Tanzania at large.

A Long-Term Partnership with Zanzibar

Together, these initiatives reflect a broader truth about the Bank’s approach to growth. The opening of the Paje Branch was not simply about bringing banking services closer to customers — it was about establishing a long-term partnership with the people and communities of Zanzibar.

Through support for the Paje Police Station and Paje Primary School, the Bank is demonstrating that its presence in a community carries real and lasting meaning.

These efforts form part of the Bank’s wider Corporate Social Responsibility agenda, focused on education, community empowerment and sustainable development across Tanzania. As Zanzibar continues to grow and evolve, the Bank remains committed to working alongside communities, government institutions and development partners to build a future where economic opportunity and social progress go hand in hand.

Because at Exim Bank, success is not measured solely by financial growth — but by the positive difference made in the lives of the people and communities we serve.
