Kongwa and legacy of African liberation solidarity

DODOMA: KONGWA District in Dodoma Region stands as a cornerstone of African liberation history, having served in the 1960s as a sanctuary and military training ground for southern African liberation movements.

Established in 1964, the camp hosted thousands of exiles and future heads of state who were engaged in the struggle for independence across the region. The site holds particular significance in Namibia’s liberation history.

It hosted Namibian freedom fighters and served as one of the key bases where founding President Sam Nujoma and other liberation leaders lived and organised parts of the independence struggle against colonial rule.

Beyond Namibia, Kongwa also played a vital regional role in liberation movements across southern Africa.

It served as a training and operational base for liberation fighters for Mozambique, South Africa anjd Zimbabwe.
