Moshi district surpasses loan target as more residents reap gains from its economic support fund

MOSHI: THE Moshi District Council is set to exceed its target for disbursing loans funded through 10 percent of its internally generated revenue during the 2025/2026 financial year, following strong loan recoveries and prudent management of its economic empowerment fund.

Speaking on the progress of the program, today, June 16, 2026,  the Executive Director of Moshi District Council, Shedrack Mhagama, said the council had allocated over  1bn/-  for loans targeting women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

By April 2026, a substantial portion of the funds had already been disbursed to dozens of groups, benefiting hundreds of residents across the district.

Mhagama noted that women’s groups received the largest share of the financing, followed by youth groups and organizations representing persons with disabilities, reflecting the council’s commitment to inclusive economic empowerment.

He added that a second phase of disbursements, running from April to June 2026, is expected to support additional groups, further expanding the reach of the initiative and creating more opportunities for entrepreneurship and income generation.

According to the council, the program is projected to benefit more than 120 groups and over 550 individuals by the end of the financial year. The total amount disbursed is expected to reach  1.248bn/-, surpassing the annual target by nearly 20 percent.

Mhagama attributed the achievement to the council’s continued dedication to setting aside 10 percent of its internal revenue for economic empowerment, as well as the positive repayment culture demonstrated by beneficiaries, particularly women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

He further commended young beneficiaries for their strong repayment discipline, saying their commitment has helped strengthen the revolving loan fund and enabled the council to extend support to even more citizens.

The success of the program underscores Moshi District Council’s efforts to promote financial inclusion, stimulate local economic growth, and improve livelihoods through accessible financing opportunities.
