Peaceful Eid celebrations reflect TZ’s enduring unity

DAR ES SALAAM: YESTERDAY’s Eid al-Adha celebrations in the country as well as globally reminded Tanzanians that peace, tolerance and unity remain among the nation’s greatest strengths.

Across cities, towns and villages, Muslims gathered peacefully for prayers while citizens from different faiths demonstrated understanding, cooperation and solidarity throughout the festivities.

Here, the Tanzania Police Force deserves special recognition for maintaining peace, protecting worshippers, controlling traffic and ensuring public safety during the celebrations.

Their professionalism, visibility and discipline helped families celebrate confidently and prevented incidents that could have disrupted national harmony.

At a time when many countries experience religious tension and insecurity during major events, Tanzania continues offering an important example of peaceful coexistence. Ordinary Tanzanians also deserve praise for respecting one another and preserving the country’s long-standing culture of religious freedom and mutual respect.

The celebrations showed that unity remains possible when citizens reject division, hatred and unnecessary confrontation. However, society must also confront worrying behaviour increasingly associated with festive periods, especially among some young people.

Many celebrations are now linked with excessive alcohol consumption, reckless conduct, dangerous driving and promiscuity. Such practices are condemned by Holy Books and by moral standards respected throughout society.

Young people must understand that celebrations should promote gratitude, compassion, family unity, responsibility and discipline rather than destructive behaviour. Binge drinking and irresponsible conduct damage health, threaten public safety, weaken personal dignity and destroy future opportunities.

Religious festivities are intended to strengthen spiritual values, encourage togetherness and inspire moral responsibility within communities. Parents, religious leaders, teachers and community elders should continue guiding youth toward positive behaviour and responsible celebrations. Social media influencers and entertainment organisers should also avoid promoting lifestyles that glorify drunkenness and immoral conduct during public celebrations.

Tanzania’s strength has always depended on unity, respect, discipline and peaceful coexistence among its people.

The peaceful Eid al-Adha celebrations demonstrated that citizens can celebrate important religious occasions responsibly while protecting national harmony. This spirit should continue beyond holidays and remain part of everyday life across the country.
