Why Congo’s visa-free move significant for Africa
CONGO BRAZZAVILLE: REPUBLIC of the Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso has announced that people from all African nations will enjoy visa-free entry into the country from next year.
The landmark decision, hailed as a major boost to continental unity and economic integration, was made on Monday during the opening ceremony of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group’s 2026 Annual Meetings in Brazzaville.
“As from the first of January 2027, nationals of all African countries will have visafree access and will no longer need a visa to come to Congo,” President Sassou-Nguesso declared, drawing thunderous applause from thousands of leaders, ministers, diplomats, investors, and development partners gathered at the conference centre.
He urged African countries to move beyond selfishness and nationalism in pursuit of stronger continental integration. The decision is being viewed as a significant step toward achieving the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area and strengthening people-to-people connections across the continent.
The celebrations coincided with Africa Day, observed every May 25 to mark the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, now the African Union.
This year’s commemoration focused on sustainable water management and sanitation under the African Union’s Agenda 2063 framework. Leaders, ministers, diplomats, investors, youth representatives and development partners from across Africa attended the event, united in calls for stronger economic cooperation and African-led development initiatives.

President Sassou-Nguesso stressed the importance of collective investment in infrastructure, saying no single African country could independently finance the roads, railways, ports, airports and energy systems needed to transform the continent.
He also called for increased global support for environmental conservation and reforestation, describing Africa’s forests as “a second green lung of humanity” in efforts to combat climate change. AfDB Group President Sidi Ould Tah echoed calls for deeper African integration and stronger continental institutions.
“The generation of 1963 gave us political agency; our responsibility now is to strengthen Africa’s collective agency,” he said, stressing the need for Africa to build confidence in its own ability to shape its future. African Union Chairperson and Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye, speaking via video link, called for accelerated continental integration and reforms in global governance systems to better reflect Africa’s growing influence.
The AfDB 2026 Annual Meetings continue this week in Brazzaville under the theme: “Mobilising Africa’s Development Financing at Scale in a Fragmented World.”
