GGML adds colours to the Cultural Festival as it rages on in Geita today

GEITA: GEITA Gold Mining Limited (GGML), in collaboration with the Geita Municipal Council’s Department of Culture, has today, May 22, 2026, launches a two-day Cultural Day festival at the Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan grounds (formerly EPZ Grounds) in Geita.

The event, which began early today and  climaxes tomorrow, May  23, 2026, has brought together members of the host community, schools, cultural groups and GGML staff to celebrate the richness and diversity of the cultures that make up the Lake Zone and Tanzania at large.

The Cultural festival is designed both as a celebration and as a living bridge between generations, an occasion for the languages, arts, food, music, dress and traditions of the Lake Zone’s communities to be passed from those who carry them to those who will carry them next.

Activities across the two days include the formal launch of a Lake Zone Cultural Book ; performances of native dances from the Sukuma, Longo and Zinza traditions, connecting young people to the historical roots expressed through movement for centuries; a showcase of traditional cultural attire from community members and GGML staff representing their respective tribes, with explanations of the significance of each; a display and tasting of traditional foods from Lake Zone communities; an art, craft and cultural artefact exhibition, as well as  musical performances by traditional cultural groups and students from local secondary schools.

“At GGML, we believe that meaningful community engagement goes beyond infrastructure and investment,” said Gilbert Mworia, Senior Manager, Sustainability at GGML “It means showing up for the moments that matter to the people we live and work alongside. Cultural Day is one of those moments. The cultures of Geita and Tanzania are not just background to the work we do here, they are part of who we are as a company. Celebrating their beauty, their strength and their diversity is something we are proud to do alongside the Geita Municipal Council and our host community.”

The event’s objectives reflect a commitment to unity across difference: to promote appreciation of cultural diversity, to deepen understanding of the traditions and customs that shape community life in Geita, to encourage mutual respect and tolerance, to give individuals a platform to express pride in their heritage, and to strengthen the social bonds that sustain a community over time.

The Cultural Festival also recognises the role that cultural awareness plays in preparing young people for a changing world. By connecting youth with their cultural roots and giving them exposure to the diversity of communities around them, the event is designed to develop the kind of open, informed perspective that equips Tanzanian young people to participate as capable and confident citizens — locally and globally.

The event is open to the public. Members of the community are encouraged to attend, participate and bring their families.
