Govt approves 985km road network in Nyang’hwale

GEITA: THE government has approved a new 985.28-kilometre road network in Nyang’hwale District to be managed by the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA).

TARURA Manager for Nyang’hwale District, Eng John Msita, revealed this during the third councillors’ meeting for the third quarter of the 2025/26 financial year.

He said the newly approved roads are part of proposed routes that underwent registration and verification before being incorporated into the TARURA-maintained road network.

Eng Msita said that during the 2024/25 financial year, TARURA in the district received 1.3bn/-, equivalent to 77.9 per cent of the approved 1.7bn/- budget for road improvement projects.

He further explained that by April this year, the agency had received 211m/-, equal to 13 per cent of the approved 1.5bn/- budget allocated for road maintenance in the 2025/26 financial year.

Contributing to the report, Nyamtukuza Ward Councillor, Mr Gervas Mabesa, urged TARURA to strengthen supervision of contractors handling road construction and rehabilitation projects.

He said some contractors fail to meet required standards, resulting in poor road works that damage infrastructure instead of improving it.

Meanwhile, Nyang’hwale District Council Chairperson, Mr John Izack, appealed to councillors to remain patient as TARURA continues to wait for funds from the central government.

Mr Izack also asked councillors to approve the establishment of a special fund from internally generated revenue to support emergency road repairs across the district.

On her part, District Executive Director, Ms Husna Toni, said the council was committed to strengthening internal revenue collection to support development projects.

“For the 2025/26 financial year, as of April 2026, we have collected 4.4bn/-, equivalent to 87 per cent of the projected 5.07bn/- target,” she said.
