Teachers’ promotions, allowances plan unveiled

ZANZIBAR: MINISTER for Education and Vocational Training, Ms Khadija Salum Ali, has said the government is taking steps to improve teachers’ welfare, including promoting 583 teachers in the first phase and 1,600 teachers in the second phase during the 2025/2026 financial year.
Responding to a question from Dr Nasra Nassor Omar (Special Seats, ACT-Wazalendo), the minister said her ministry has also submitted proposals to the Civil Service Office for the introduction of new allowances in the 2026/2027 financial year.

The proposed incentives include teaching allowances for all teachers, special allowances for educators working in inclusive schools and additional support for teachers handling students with special needs.
Earlier, Dr Nasra questioned what tangible improvements had been made to teachers’ welfare beyond salary increments and transport allowances, and sought clarification on plans to further expand benefits for teachers.
