Dr Samia sends condolences as Botswana mourns the death of its former president, Mogae

DODOMA: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has sent a message of condolence following the death of former Botswana President Festus Gontebanye Mogae, describing him as a distinguished leader who made significant contributions to Botswana and Africa at large.
In a statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communications today,May 8, 2026, President Samia said the late Mogae played a key role in promoting good governance, economic management and efforts to address public health challenges during his leadership.

On behalf of the government and people of Tanzania, President Samia conveyed condolences to Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko, the bereaved family, the government and the people of Botswana during the mourning period.
In the statement the Head of State noted that Tanzania stands in solidarity with Botswana at this difficult time and continues to value the strong friendship and cooperation existing between the two countries.
Botswana’s former head of state Festus Mogae died today, May 8, 2026 aged 86 years, President Duma Boko announced.
