Tanzania pledges to expand access to technical education by increasing the number of colleges

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has pledged to continue expanding access to technical and vocational education by increasing the number of colleges and student enrolment across the country.
The Minister for Education, Science and Technology Professor Adolf Mkenda made the statement when presenting the ministry’s 2026/2027 budget estimates in Parliament in Dodoma earlier on Thursday stating that the government has registered 263 technical and vocational training institutions.
He said the newly registered institutions include 45 technical colleges, 152 vocational training centres and 66 vocational secondary schools.

According to the minister, the move has raised the number of technical education institutions in the country to 577, vocational training colleges to 1,066 and vocational secondary schools to 267.
Furthermore, the minister revealed that the government plans to enrol 374,000 students in technical and vocational education and training programmes, with the majority expected to join technical colleges while others will be admitted to vocational training centres.
He said the investment is aimed at equipping young people with skills for employment and self-employment while addressing the growing demands of the labour market.
