Tanzania launches sponsorship for its youth seeking to study Artificial Intelligence overseas

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has launched a special scholarship programme to sponsor Tanzanian youth in Artificial Intelligence (AI) studies abroad as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s capacity in emerging technologies.
Presenting the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology’s 2026/2027 budget estimates in Parliament in Dodoma on May 7, 2026, Education Minister Professor Adolf Mkenda said the initiative seeks to prepare Tanzania for the growing global demand for AI and digital innovation skills.
Professor Mkenda said the government will sponsor students to study at leading international universities with strong academic systems and partnerships with technology companies that provide both classroom training and practical industry skills.

He said the ministry has already introduced the “Samia Scholarship Extended, DS/AI+” programme, which will operate through a transparent and competitive selection process.
Under the first phase of the programme, 50 top-performing students from the 2025 Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) science combinations involving mathematics have been selected for overseas studies in AI-related fields.
