Geological firm discovers presence of substantial mineral resources in Rukwa region

RUKWA: THE Rukwa Regional Commissioner, Makongoro Nyerere, has announced that a study conducted by 3rd Geological Brigade of Sichuan has confirmed the presence of substantial mineral resources in the region. The findings are expected to enhance the contribution of the mining sector to the national economy while expanding investment opportunities.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam on May 6, 2026, during a presentation of preliminary results from the study carried out in April, Nyerere noted that the research also identified mineral belts extending into neighboring regions. This suggests the potential for a broader geological corridor with commercial mining viability.

He further explained that the researchers have proposed pathways toward extraction, highlighting key resources including coal, copper, gold, and natural gas. From a resource governance perspective, this positions Rukwa as an emerging node within Tanzania’s extractive industry value chain, particularly as demand for transition minerals continues to rise globally.

Meanwhile, Rukwa Resident Mining Officer, Engineer Joseph Kumburu, stated that ten companies have already initiated investments in the region to support small- and medium-scale miners. He added that 26 areas have been earmarked for mineral exploration under the Ministry of Minerals. Additionally, a 259-square-meter gold site has been allocated to small-scale miners, with an average grade of 2.9 grams in some sections, indicating moderate commercial potential.

A representative of 3rd Geological Brigade of Sichuan, Yang Chao, confirmed that initial findings point to significant mineral endowments in Rukwa. He indicated that the second phase of the study will focus on defining appropriate extraction methodologies, a critical step in transitioning from exploration to production.
