Chande Commission notes danger in intolerance toward differing views

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA inquiry commissioner says panel members received hundreds of abusive messages after report release.

A member of Tanzania’s commission of inquiry into violence surrounding the 2025 general election said today, April 28, 2026 that commissioners had received more than 300 abusive messages on their mobile phones following the submission of the panel’s report to President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Speaking to editors and journalists in Dar es Salaam, Ibrahim Juma said the reaction reflected what he described as a growing intolerance toward differing views in Tanzania.

“After the report was released, we received more than 300 insulting messages because there are people who do not want our findings, reached through a methodology of listening to people, to reach the public,” Juma said.

He warned that the attacks signalled what he called a dangerous trend in which some people sought to silence opposing opinions while insisting that only their own views should be heard.

The commission was formed to investigate violence that erupted during and after Tanzania’s October 2025 general election. Its findings have sparked intense public debate over accountability, political freedoms and the handling of the unrest.
