Youth empowerment key to Tanzania’s long-term stability

DAR ES SALAAM: IN the months following Tanzania’s 2025 General Election, national attention has largely focused on restoring stability, strengthening unity and rebuilding public confidence.

However, beyond the immediate political developments, the country is increasingly turning its attention towards a longer-term priority, investing in young people as a foundation for sustainable peace, economic growth and national stability.

With a rapidly growing youth population, Tanzania’s future will largely depend on how effectively young people are empowered through education, employment, entrepreneurship and participation in national development.

The country’s evolving post 2025 development agenda reflects a growing understanding that long term stability cannot rely only on political or security measures, but must also be supported by economic inclusion and opportunity, particularly for the youth.

The unrest that followed the October 2025 election highlighted the pressures that can emerge when economic and social expectations among young people outpace available opportunities.

While immediate efforts focused on restoring order and accountability, attention has increasingly shifted towards addressing underlying socio-economic challenges.

This shift marks an important change in policy thinking, where young people are no longer viewed solely as participants in political processes, but as central drivers of economic transformation and national progress.

One of the clearest signs of this approach was the establishment of a dedicated ministry responsible for youth development in December 2025.

The ministry was created to coordinate programmes aimed at promoting youth participation, economic empowerment and civic engagement.

The move has been widely viewed as a significant step towards placing youth issues at the centre of national policy planning.

Experts argue that youth-related initiatives often suffer from fragmentation, making coordination essential if programmes are to achieve meaningful and lasting impact.

By creating a dedicated institutional framework, the government has signalled that youth development is now regarded as a core national priority rather than a secondary policy concern.

Employment remains one of the most important pillars of the youth agenda.

Access to jobs and livelihoods plays a crucial role in strengthening social stability.

Where young people are able to find employment, develop skills and build sustainable futures, the likelihood of frustration and social unrest is significantly reduced.

In response, the government has introduced a number of measures aimed at expanding employment opportunities.

These include the recruitment of 12,000 public servants, with 6,500 positions allocated to the health and education sectors.

Although the number may not fully match the growing demand for jobs, analysts say the initiative demonstrates commitment towards expanding formal employment opportunities for young Tanzanians.

At the same time, greater emphasis has been placed on vocational education and skills development. T

raining centres across the country are being strengthened to equip young people with practical skills in areas such as information and communication technology (ICT), entrepreneurship and technical trades.

The focus is not only on creating jobs but also on improving employability by ensuring young people possess skills needed in a changing economy.

Entrepreneurship has also emerged as a major pillar of youth empowerment efforts.

Recognising that not all employment opportunities will come through traditional formal jobs, policymakers are increasingly encouraging young people to create businesses and generate their own economic opportunities.

Government-supported initiatives aimed at supporting youth-led enterprises, including access to financing and business training programmes, have already started benefiting sectors such as fisheries and group-based economic activities.

Supporting entrepreneurship not only creates income opportunities for young people but also contributes to building a more resilient economy driven by small and medium enterprises.

Digital technology is also playing an expanding role in youth engagement and participation.

According to available information, more than 20 million young people have been reached through digital platforms designed to improve access to information, services and economic opportunities.

These platforms are helping connect young people with government programmes, entrepreneurship opportunities and financial resources, while also creating new channels for communication and civic engagement.

However, experts caution that increased digital participation also requires responsible use of online platforms, particularly in combating misinformation and promoting constructive public dialogue.

Beyond economic inclusion, efforts are also being made to increase youth participation in governance and decision-making processes.

Recent appointments of young people to advisory and administrative positions are seen as efforts to ensure younger generations are represented in national leadership structures.

Analysts say such inclusion strengthens public confidence and helps bridge the gap between institutions and citizens.

These initiatives reflect a broader national understanding that lasting stability is built through inclusion, opportunity and participation.

Tanzania’s long-term peace and development will depend not only on effective governance and security measures, but also on creating conditions where young people feel included, empowered and hopeful about their future.

While challenges such as youth unemployment and growing demand for opportunities remain significant, many believe the current direction represents an important investment in the country’s future stability and prosperity.

For Tanzania, the focus is increasingly shifting from responding to crises towards building conditions that reduce the likelihood of future instability.

By investing in youth empowerment, economic inclusion and participation in governance, the country is laying foundations for a more stable, united and prosperous future.

The long-term stability of any nation depends not only on its institutions, but also on the opportunities available to its people, especially its youth.
