People’s bond, Kiswahili credited for 62 years of Union stability

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Executive Director of the Public-Private Partnership Centre (PPPC), David Kafulila, has attributed the longevity of Tanzania’s Union to strong social bonds among its people, describing it as a rare example of a people-driven partnership in Africa.

Executive Director of the Public-Private Partnership Centre (PPPC), David Kafulila,

In a message shared on his X account on April 26, 2026, Kafulila said the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar—now marking 62 years—stands out as the only union of two independent states on the continent to endure for more than six decades.

“Ours is a union of the people more than of governments,” he wrote.

Kafulila noted that several African unions formed in the post-independence era collapsed within a short period. He cited examples such as the Ethiopia–Eritrea federation (1952–1962), the Ghana–Guinea–Mali union (1958–1963), and Senegambia (1982–1989), all of which eventually dissolved.

According to him, Tanzania’s success lies in its unique foundation, which goes beyond formal political agreements. He said the Union was built on what he described as “blood brotherhood,” the widespread use of Kiswahili, and a shared social and historical background among citizens.

He contrasted this with unions in other regions, such as the European Union, which he said largely depend on economic and trade arrangements rather than deep-rooted cultural ties.

Kafulila emphasized that these social foundations have fostered a strong sense of unity among Tanzanians, making the Union resilient over time.

He concluded by paying tribute to the founding leaders of the nation, including Julius Nyerere and Abeid Karume, whose vision laid the groundwork for the enduring partnership.

Tanzania marks the anniversary of the Union each year on April 26, commemorating the historic merger of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964.
