Tanzania sees mining as a driver of its 1tri/- economy target 

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government is positioning the mining sector as a central driver of Tanzania’s ambition to build a 1-tri/- economy by 2050, following high-level talks with industry players aimed at unlocking investment and boosting productivity.

The strategy was outlined during a meeting between the Ministry of Minerals and the Tanzania Chamber of Mines held at the Mining Commission in Dodoma.

Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, said achieving the ambitious target under the national development vision will require heavy investment in mineral exploration, stronger oversight and closer collaboration with the private sector.

“This goal cannot be realised without prioritising extensive exploration of mineral resources in partnership with the private sector,” he said.

Mr Mavunde stressed that exploration is the backbone of the sector, opening doors for new investments, increasing output and ensuring the country derives maximum value from its natural resources.

During the meeting, stakeholders presented challenges, views and proposals through the Tanzania Chamber of Mines, with the minister assuring that the government will act on them to improve the business and investment environment.

He also urged TCM members to channel their concerns through a unified platform to strengthen engagement with the government and enhance coordination.

On regulation, the minister directed closer cooperation between the ministry’s Permanent Secretary’s office and government institutions to ensure effective enforcement of policies and laws without disrupting investors.

Addressing the issue of illegal intrusion into licensed mining areas, Mr Mavunde warned that such practices will not be tolerated, noting that firm directives have already been issued to curb the vice.

The renewed push signals Tanzania’s intent to leverage its vast mineral wealth as a cornerstone for long-term economic transformation.
