Msigwa calls on the media to use their platforms in promoting peace and solidarity

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, who also serves as the Government Chief Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, has urged Tanzanian media to use their platforms responsibly to promote peace, unity, solidarity, and reconciliation for the benefit of the nation.

Msigwa made the remarks today, April 15, 2026,  in Dar es Salaam during a press conference organized by the Tanzania Union of Press Clubs (UTPC) in collaboration with the Department of Information and the Office of the Government Chief Spokesperson.

He stated that the media plays a significant role in society and has the capacity to shape public perception, emphasizing that it should be used in the broader national interest rather than to mislead or incite unrest.

He explained that the media industry holds a strategic position in advancing development, noting that through journalists’ work, citizens can be effectively engaged in economic and social activities that contribute to both individual and national progress.

Msigwa added that the proper use of media can support the country in achieving its development goals, including the national Vision 2050, which aims to build an industrial economy, ensure social equity, promote inclusive justice, and develop a skilled workforce.

He further noted that the government has continued to improve the working environment for media institutions through legal reforms, including amendments to the Media Services Act, Chapter 229 and its regulations, aimed at enhancing media freedom and accountability.

He emphasized that due to the importance of the media, the government has maintained close collaboration with stakeholders in the sector to ensure that journalists effectively fulfill their responsibilities while upholding professional ethics.

However, Msigwa cautioned that media platforms can also be misused to spread inflammatory information and threaten peace, stressing that journalists have a responsibility to maintain professionalism and prioritize national interests in their reporting.
