Institute move targets tourism growth

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Ms Lela Mohammed Mussa, has called for improved management and development of the Tourism Training Institute to strengthen its capacity and support growth of the tourism sector.
Ms Mussa made the remarks during the official handover of the institute at Maruhubi, following its transfer from the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training to the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage.
She said improving infrastructure and creating an attractive environment at the institute will strengthen its image and position it as both a training centre and a tourism attraction.
“The transfer followed all required procedures and would enable the institute to better fulfil its role of training, developing, and strengthening tourism-related skills,” she said.
The institute previously operated as an affiliate of the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), but the government has reversed the arrangement to align it more closely with sector priorities.

Acting Minister for Tourism and Heritage, Mr Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga, said the institute has entered into a partnership with Oman Traditional College to promote cultural exchange and strengthen tourism development. He said plans are underway to further develop the institute, create employment opportunities for youths and prepare graduates for both local and international job markets.
Mr Soraga added that the courses offered will equip young people with practical skills and produce competent professionals capable of delivering quality services.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, Dr Aboud Suleiman Jumbe, said the ministry will continue working with the private sector to improve tourism standards, innovation and service quality. He said the transfer will strengthen training across the tourism value chain and expand opportunities in both domestic and international markets.
Meanwhile, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Dr Mwanakhamis Adam Ameir, said the institute was originally established to promote tourism and that the transfer will better align it with sector needs. He added that the move will strengthen public-private partnerships and support youth capacity building through joint initiatives.
