PCCB recovers 119m/- after probing 5.2bn/- projects

Singida: THE Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Singida Region has recovered 119.16m/- and four vehicles after scrutinising funds used in the implementation of development projects worth 5.2bn/-.

The anti-graft body revealed this in its second quarter report for the 2025/2026 financial year, presented to journalists in Singida by Deputy Regional Bureau Chief (DRBC), Petro Horombe saying during the particular period, a total of 25 projects were investigated.

Mr Horombe said the initiative was conducted in accordance with the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Act, Cap 329 (Revised 2023).

He said the bureau scrutinised projects in education, water, roads, health and administration sectors during the period.

The report showed that 57.7m/- was returned to the government following investigations into allegations of embezzlement of public funds.

“Four vehicles that had been sold illegally were also recovered and returned to their respective institutions,” Mr Horombe said.

He explained that 43.8m/- had been paid to contractors for supplying construction materials that were never delivered to project sites, but after PCCB follow-up, materials worth that amount were delivered to the respective projects.

According to the deputy bureau chief, a building materials trader had unlawfully obtained 7.5m/- in Value Added Tax (VAT) by issuing a fake Electronic Fiscal Device (EFD) receipt after receiving payment for supplied materials.

“After investigation, the trader submitted a valid receipt with the correct tax deductions,” he said.

Mr Horombe further said investigations revealed that 2.3m/- had been paid to a contractor who allegedly supplied construction materials that did not meet the required quality and contract specifications.

He added that about 1.6m/- in withholding tax, deducted from payments made to contractors supplying construction materials, had not been remitted to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).

He also said PCCB facilitated the return of 3m/- to a citizen who had mistakenly paid the amount into a water users association account after the leadership initially hesitated to refund the money until the bureau intervened.

Mr Horombe thanked citizens for their continued trust and cooperation in reporting corruption-related incidents.

He also called on the public to continue submitting complaints related to corruption in accordance with the law.
