PM inspects operations at upgraded Kasanga Port

SUMBAWANGA: PRIME Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba has today, March 10, 2026, inspected the infrastructure and operations of Kasanga Port, located in Kalambo District, during his official working visit to the Rukwa region.
Kasanga Port underwent expansion by the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) in 2019. The expansion included extending the port’s jetty from 20 meters to 120 meters with a depth of 14 meters, construction of staff housing, and a terminal building capable of serving 200 passengers at a time, at a cost of 4.7bn/-. Additionally, two cargo storage warehouses were built, each with a capacity of 2,500 tonnes.

Statistics from the port indicate that between July 2023 and December 2025, it handled a total of 3,418 tons of cargo, 3,648 passengers, 11 ships, and 337 boats. The cargo handled includes cement, stones, and food products such as maize, rice, and maize flour (sembe).
Kasanga Port is a key piece of strategic infrastructure that promotes transportation and trade in the Lake Tanganyika corridor, contributing to the economic growth of Rukwa Region and surrounding areas.
