Geita to host National Women Day festivity

GEITA: GEITA Region will host this year’s national International Women’s Day celebrations on March 8, with the event expected to highlight women’s empowerment and efforts to combat Gender Based Violence (GBV).

The celebrations will also mark the launch of the PAMOJA Project, an initiative aimed at promoting gender equality and addressing GBV through the economic and social empowerment of women.

Geita Regional Commissioner Martine Shigela said the Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children selected the region to host the event, which will be attended by the Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children, Dr Dorothy Gwajima, as the guest of honour.

Speaking to journalists in Geita Town, Mr Shigela said the celebrations will be guided by the theme: “Equal Rights for Women and Girls: An Inclusive Foundation for Achieving Vision 2050.”

He said the theme emphasises the need for society to ensure women and girls have equal access to rights, opportunities and protection in order to contribute fully to sustainable development.

Mr Shigela noted that the region will use the celebrations as an opportunity to strengthen services aimed at addressing gender-based violence while improving child care, growth and development.

The services will include banking services, legal aid, health insurance registration and services from the National Identification Authority (NIDA).

“There will also be the Gender and Children’s Desk together with nongovernmental organisations, providing citizens with an opportunity to access various services in one place,” he said.

Mr Shigela added that the celebrations will also promote women’s participation in the mining sector and other national development projects through empowerment programmes organised by various trainers.
