Samia, Mwinyi elected as CCM’s chair, vice-chair
CHAMA Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) kicked off its 10th National Congress on Wednesday in the political capital of Dodoma, with members electing Samia Suluhu Hassan and Dr Hussein Mwinyi as the party’s Chairperson and Vice Chairperson respectively.
Dr Mwinyi, who doubles as the President of the Revolutionary Government, is taking over from Dr Ali Mohamed Shein whose tenure has expired. Dr Shein is former President of the Isles.
Cadres of the CCM, one of the oldest political parties in Africa, have also elected members of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Out of the 1,915 valid votes cast, the newly elected chair Samia, who is also the Tanzania’s President, garnered 1,914.
Gracing the opening ceremony of the two-day meeting that ends today, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is the party’s chairperson said the party had exhibited political maturity in the African continent as she insisted that during the intra-party election, CCM had considered transparency, independency and all rights as per the party’s constitution.
Mbashiru Katare, a Daily News Journalist who has been stationed at a famous Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre (JKCC) for in-depth coverage of the ruling party’s Congress reported that Dodoma had experienced a perennial traffic gridlock for the better part of day.
Out of 1,934 total NEC members, about 1,928 members attended the meeting (equal to 99.6percent) meaning the quorum was fully attained.
