Mwinyi awards medals to leaders, citizens

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Mwinyi has awarded medals to distinguished leaders and citizens in recognition of their exceptional service and contribution to the Zanzibar Revolution and national development.
Reading the First Proclamation for the conferment of the honours, Principal Secretary in the Office of the President, State House Zanzibar, Mr Saleh Juma Mussa, said the awards comprise the Revolution Medal and the Distinguished Service Medal, with a total of 18 recipients.
The ceremony was held on Sunday at the State House grounds in Zanzibar Town and was attended by national leaders, representatives of political parties, chief executives of public institutions, commanders of defence and security forces and members of the public.
The awards form part of activities marking the 62nd anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution.

Those awarded the Revolution medal include the widow of Zanzibar’s first President, Mama Fatuma Karume; the Chief Mufti of Zanzibar, Sheikh Saleh bin Omar bin Kaab bin Ahmed Baalawiy; the late Sheikh Hassan bin Ameir AlShirazy; the late Sheikh Mussa Makungu Ali; the late Bishop John Ackland Ramadhani; Professor Jose Piquer; Mr Gulam Abdalla Rashid and the late Bimvita Mussa Kibendera.
Recipients of the distinguished service medal include Brigadier General Said Hamis Said of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF); Zanzibar Police Commissioner Kombo Khamis Kombo and Zanzibar Commissioner of Immigration, Hassan Ali Hassan.

Others are Commodore Azana Hassan Msingiri of the Zanzibar Anti-Smuggling Force (KMKM); Colonel Makame Abdallah Daima of the Zanzibar National Service; Commissioner Rashid Mzee Abdallah of the Zanzibar Fire and Rescue Force and Commissioner Khamis Bakari Khamis of the Zanzibar Reformatory Centre (Prisons).
The list also has the Director General of the Zanzibar Drug Control Authority Colonel Burhani Mzee Nassor, Head of the Zanzibar Volunteer Force (KVZ) Lieutenant Colonel Said Ali Shamhuna and Director General of the Zanzibar Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Authority (ZAECA) Mr Ali Abdalla Ali.
The Revolution medal is conferred on individuals who founded, participated in or upheld the ideals of the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution, or who have brought honour to Zanzibar through outstanding service in various fields while demonstrating exemplary moral conduct.
The medal may be awarded to both living and deceased individuals.
The distinguished service medal recognises individuals who have demonstrated exemplary service and leadership in their respective roles.
Zanzibar marked the 62nd anniversary of the Revolution through a series of celebrations and events, including the launch and inauguration of development projects.
