Barker era kicks off as Simba shift gears

ZANZIBAR: SIMBA SC have returned to the training ground, intensifying preparations as they brace for a demanding run of fixtures across domestic and continental competitions, including the Mainland Premier League, the CAF Champions League and the ongoing Mapinduzi Cup.
The Reds will kick off Mapinduzi Cup campaign on January 3 with a group stage clash against Muembe Makumbi City at the New Amaan Complex.
The encounter is expected to provide an early indication of the team’s readiness as they gear up for a packed and challenging season.
Speaking on the club’s preparations yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Simba Media and Communications Manager, Ahmed Ally, confirmed that the squad has resumed training with a strong focus on physical condition and regaining match fitness.
“The players are back on the training ground and the emphasis is on strength, conditioning and overall preparedness. Our goal is to ensure the team is fully ready for the challenges ahead,” Ally said.
He noted that Mapinduzi Cup will be instrumental for newly appointed Head Coach, Steve Barker, offering a valuable platform to assess the squad, introduce his tactical philosophy and fine-tune preparations for both local and international competitions.
“This tournament presents an important opportunity for the new coach to closely evaluate the squad and begin implementing his ideas,” Ally added.
Addressing the upcoming transfer window, Ally revealed that the club will take a measured and strategic approach, allowing Barker sufficient time to assess the squad before making recruitment decisions.
“We will wait for the coach’s assessment to clearly identify areas that genuinely need strengthening. This approach ensures we remain competitive without making rushed decisions,” he explained.

Ally further emphasised that giving the technical bench adequate time to implement its philosophy will help players better understand expectations, maintain squad harmony and ensure efficient use of club resources.
Simba have also officially unveiled Barker alongside his two assistants, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the club.
The South African tactician is widely respected for his ability to develop young players, build financially stable teams and deploy an attractive 4-3-3 system aimed at controlling midfield play.
Barker is joined by performance analyst Prinil Deen, formerly of Mamelodi Sundowns and a former Zambia international goalkeeper who previously served as AmaZulu FC’s goalkeeping coach and will now oversee Simba’s goalkeeping department.
As well Simba SC have officially announced Sibusiso Makhula as their new fitness coach. Makhula will team up with head coach Steven Barker to strengthen the club’s player development project and overall performance strategy.
“The arrival of the new coach signals a clear direction and shared ambition to raise performance standards,” Ally concluded, expressing confidence that Simba are well equipped to compete at the highest level, both domestically and on the continental stage.
