Mutukula border post hailed for efficiency as it generates 9bn/- monthly

MUTUKULA: THE Minister for Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, has called for strong cooperation among government employees working at the Mutukula One-Stop Border Post, located in Misenyi District, Kagera Region, which serves as a border between Tanzania and Uganda for the strengthening of national security.
The border post is said to collect approximately 9bn/- per month in revenue where from January to November 2025, a total of 44,486 visitors entered the country through the Mutukula border.
The minister made the call during an inspection tour of customs-related activities at the border post, which he conducted alongside the Kagera Regional Security and Safety Committee and urged the employees to put more efforts on national security and revenue collection for the country’s development.
Elaborating, he stated that security and revenue are essential for economic growth.

Upon his arrival in the region, the Minister received a security situation report from the Kagera Regional Commissioner, Hajjat Fatma Mwassa, which revealed the existence of various security challenges in the region, including numerous illegal entry points used by undocumented migrants and individuals who could potentially enter the country with malicious intentions aimed at disrupting the prevailing peace.
“Everyone working here must treat national security as the number one priority followed by revenue collection. For a country to continue developing, it needs funds to implement development projects promised to citizens, and those funds come from revenue collection points and one of the most important areas for revenue collection is at the borders,” the minister said.

Additionally, he said that the Mutukula border between Tanzania and Uganda is an area where, if collections are properly managed, they will significantly contribute to strengthening the government’s treasury and enable the implementation of projects that serve citizens, including health services, infrastructure such as roads, schools, and agriculture.
Speaking earlier, Officer-in-Charge of the Mutukula Immigration Post, Senior Immigration Officer Sarah Ngonyani, said that immigration services are continuing as usual, including securing the border and arresting illegal immigrants entering the country through various unofficial routes in Kanyigo and Minziro villages.
