Ulega insists on humanity as he inspects the 85km road project in Ruvuma

SONGEA: THE Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, has asked contractors to prioritize humanity and address the various challenges facing Tanzanian citizens whenever they are involved in construction projects in the country.

He gave the instructions when inspecting the progress of the Kitahi–Amani Makoro–Ruanda to Ndumbi Port road (85 km), which is being upgraded to tarmac standard by China Railway Seventh Group (CRSG) in Ruvuma region today, December 22, 2025,  noting that the government’s direction is to ensure that all challenges facing citizens are being addressed and solved.

Elaborating, the minister said that it is important for constructors to bear in mind that in every project, priorities should be given to citizens by making their lives easier and protecting their humanity, rather than focusing solely on completing road works.

“Think about how you can make people’s lives easier. If you can install culverts to prevent water from entering people’s homes, install the culverts first and then continue with construction,” he said.

The minister’s visit to the area came following directives from the Prime Minister, Mwigulu Nchemba, who expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of construction of the road despite the government having already paid the contractor.

Additionally, he asked the contractor to speed up construction without delays, emphasizing that the government does not want to see citizens suffer over issues that can be resolved.

“Ensure that you construct pedestrian crossings, widen drainage channels, increase the length of culverts in the Amani Makoro area and install streetlights from Kitahi to Amani Makoro to facilitate business activities both day and night,” he said.

Furthermore, Minister Ulega also instructed the TANROADS Regional Manager for Ruvuma to ensure the construction of truck parking areas within the road reserve at Amani Makoro, so that trucks do not park along the roadside and damage the infrastructure.
