New ride-hailing services boost driver opportunities

DODOMA: Drivers in Dodoma, Mwanza, and Morogoro may soon enjoy new income opportunities with the launch of Maxim, an international online transport company.

This entry into the vibrant urban transport market is expected to enhance competition.

Founded in 2003 and operating in over 1,000/- cities worldwide, Maxim provides motorcycle, three-wheeler, and car transport, along with goods delivery, all accessible via a mobile app.

Speaking at the launch event in Dodoma, Maxim’s Regional Head, Franklin Foy, emphasized the company’s goal to expand economic opportunities for drivers while offering affordable services to passengers.

“Maxim is currently registering drivers and vehicle owners, including those with motorcycles, tuk-tuks, and cars, via its app.

“The company views Dodoma, Mwanza, and Morogoro as key hubs for expanding digital transport services across Tanzania, as industry stakeholders analyze how this increased competition will affect fares, earnings, and the overall passenger experience.”

Maxim has set initial fares at 500/- in Mwanza and Morogoro, and 1,000/- in Dodoma, varying by transport type.

Specifically, in Dodoma, fares begin at 1,000/- for motorcycles, 1,900/- for three-wheeler, and 3,000/- for cars, which are approximately 15 per cent lower than the market average, potentially attracting price-sensitive passengers.

To support new drivers, Maxim will allow them to retain 100 per cent of their earnings initially, with plans to introduce a commission of up to 25 per cent at a later stage, as permitted by the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA).

Recent years have seen significant changes in Tanzania’s online transport sector.

In 2022, LATRA lowered the maximum commission rate from 33 per cent to 15 per cent, impacting several companies, before adjusting it to 25 per cent alongside a booking fee of up to three per cent.

Currently, major players like Uber, Bolt, and InDrive dominate the market, and Maxim’s entry is anticipated to further increase competition, benefiting passengers.

Foy also highlighted Maxim’s focus on technology and safety. The app allows passengers to see the full fare before the ride, track drivers in real time, and communicate through an internet-based system that protects personal phone numbers. In Dodoma, drivers have been provided with reflective vests for improved visibility.
