Morogoro reaps 17bn/-from minerals surge

MOROGORO: THE mineral sector in Morogoro is emerging as a critical pillar of regional development, with gold sales reaching 16.51bn/- between July 2023 and September 2025.
This surge highlights the region’s growing status as a mineral hub and underscores its increasing contribution to the local economy.
The government revenue from the sector has also recorded steady growth, rising from 2.67bn/- in 2021/2022 to 4.9bn/- in 2023/2024.
Projections indicate that collections could reach 6.5bn/- in the 2025/2026 financial year, reflecting the sector’s robust potential.
The Morogoro Resident Mines Office oversees mineral operations in Gairo, Kilosa, Mvomero, and Morogoro Districts.
Morogoro Resident Mines Officer, Zabibu Napacho, said the region is rich in a wide variety of minerals, including feldspar, rhodolite amethyst, green garnet, gold, kaolin, copper, ruby, spinel, marble, graphite, rare earth elements (REE), and quartz.

“Between primary, medium, special, and prospecting licences, we have issued over 2,600 permits to strengthen the sector and attract investment,” Napacho explained.
Private mining operations are also contributing to local development. Isack Mushi, Manager of Yusra A Yusuph Mine, said the company produces dolomitic marble used in tiles, paint, and other industrial products, while actively supporting community projects.

“Our investments have included building a village office worth 28m/-, acquiring land for 4m/-, extending electricity, improving roads, drilling a borehole, and creating 65 jobs for local residents,” Mushi said.
Similarly, Shamaina Bashir, Director of Mangiolin Gems Limited, highlighted the company’s role in gemstone trading and value addition, while empowering women and youth through employment and educational support.

“Since launching operations in July 2024, ten youths have returned to school, and another ten are preparing to resume studies next year,” Bashir said.
She added that the company aims to position Morogoro’s mineral sector as a reliable revenue source and a catalyst for socio-economic advancement.
