ZEC commends police for peaceful election preparations

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) has commended the Police Force for its close cooperation and commitment to ensuring that the October 29 General Election is conducted in a peaceful, secure and orderly manner.
Speaking recently during the closing session of a one-day training for district police officers from Unguja, held at ZEC Headquarters in Maisara, ZEC Commissioner Juma Haji Ussi said the Commission is determined to conduct free, fair and credible elections that uphold democratic principles — a goal that depends heavily on the strong support of the Police Force.
“The police play a vital role in maintaining peace before, during and after the election. We deeply appreciate their readiness and cooperation, which continues to strengthen each day,” he said.
Mr Juma emphasised the importance of transparency in handling election-related complaints and urged the police to avoid unnecessary use of force.
He further called for timely communication between the Commission and the police to ensure that all electoral procedures are implemented in accordance with the law. He also praised the professionalism and cooperation shown by police officers during the training, describing it as a reflection of their firm commitment to safeguarding national security throughout the election period.

“We hope the ideas and commitments discussed here will be put into practice effectively and on time,” he added.
ZEC urged the trained officers to share the knowledge acquired with their colleagues across all districts, ensuring that every officer adheres to election guidelines and conducts operations fairly and lawfully, without political bias. Earlier, while opening the training, ZEC Commissioner Awadh Ali Said reiterated the Police Force’s central role in protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
“Elections are a national exercise that touch people’s emotions, expectations and the future of our nation,” he said.
“The Police must ensure a safe environment throughout the country, free from discrimination or favouritism.” He noted that elections often involve large gatherings and heightened emotions, making it crucial for the Police to act with integrity, neutrality and professionalism in protecting both citizens and property.
Commissioner Awadh commended the Police for their contribution during voter registration, nomination and campaign stages, saying their efforts have been instrumental in maintaining peace and stability.
“ZEC congratulates you for your cooperation. The voter registration, nomination and campaign phases have gone smoothly with minimal complaints — a sign of your professionalism,” he said.
He encouraged officers to maintain the same spirit as the election approaches, using wisdom and restraint to ensure that polling stations remain peaceful and that public gatherings are managed without intimidation or harm to voters.
The Commission reminded officers that early voting will take place on October 28, followed by the General Election on October 29, during which Zanzibaris will elect the President, Members of Parliament, House of Representatives and Councillors.
ZEC pledged to continue working closely with the police by sharing information promptly and ensuring that all electoral stages are conducted peacefully, transparently and in accordance with the law.
During the training, Assistant Returning Officer for North “A” District, Ms Jaala Makame Haji, presented a session on the Police’s role at various stages of the electoral process, stressing the need to ensure polling stations open on time, safeguard election materials and staff, and maintain order throughout voting
