Tanzania raises minimum wage for the private sector by 33.4 per cent

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government has officially announced an increase in the minimum wage for the private sector, with the new rate rising by an average of 33.4 per cent, from  275,060/- to 358,322/- per month.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities, Ridhiwani Kikwete, during a press briefing held today in Dar es Salaam. He stated that the new wage rates were published in Government Notice No. 605A dated October 13, 2025, and will officially take effect on January 1, 2026.

According to Minister Ridhiwani, the changes are in line with the powers vested in him under Section 39(1) of the Labour Institutions Act, Chapter 300, and are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve workers’ living standards. He noted that the number of sectors with regulated minimum wages has increased from 13 in 2022 to 16 in 2025, while the number of sub-sectors has risen from 25 to 46.

The affected sectors include agriculture, health, communications, transportation, hospitality, mining, trade, manufacturing, private schools, private security services, energy, fisheries and maritime services, sports and culture, among others.

The Minister emphasized that the new wage levels were determined based on criteria set by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and national benchmarks outlined in the Labour Institutions Act. These criteria include the employer’s ability to pay, rising cost of living, productivity in business, and the National Development Vision aimed at promoting economic growth and decent employment.

Additionally, Minister Ridhiwani urged all employers in the private sector to comply with the new wage rates as a legal requirement, warning that the government will not hesitate to take strict action against non-compliant employers.

“My office will continue to closely monitor the implementation of this order, provide education to employers and employees, and conduct regular assessments to ensure effective enforcement,” the Minister stressed.
