Drone technology deployed in Simiyu to address wildlife threats

SIMIYU: THE Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism is stepping up efforts to protect communities from dangerous wildlife by deploying modern technology and innovative approaches, officials said.

The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Hassan Abbasi, visited Malwilo in Meatu and Itilima in Simiyu Region to oversee a special operation aimed at equipping wildlife officers with advanced tools to tackle threats from aggressive animals and prevent property damage.

In Meatu, the Ministry handed over drones and received reports confirming the monitoring of seven elephant herds.

Cold deterrent devices were also distributed to enhance community safety. In Itilima, operations focused on addressing a persistent problem of hyena attacks on residents and livestock.

Speaking to officers and wildlife personnel, Dr. Abbasi praised their dedication and bravery. He urged communities to work closely with authorities, stressing that local cooperation is crucial for long-term solutions.

“In Itilima, where hyenas have repeatedly threatened lives and property, we have established a special unit equipped with drones, patrol motorcycles, and cold deterrent devices. These tools will strengthen our operations, but continued collaboration with communities and traditional leaders remains vital,” Dr. Abbasi said.

He added that the Ministry is reviewing the National Strategy for Managing Dangerous and Destructive Animals to incorporate new knowledge and more effective methods for wildlife management.

The initiative reflects a broader effort to combine technology, traditional knowledge, and community engagement in protecting both people and wildlife across Tanzania.
