Govt reminds parenting role to protect children’s rights

DAR ES SALAAM: KINONDONI District Commissioner Mr Saad Mtambule has called on parents to actively support the government’s efforts in protecting children’s rights, aiming to nurture a well-groomed generation capable of building the nation.
He made the call over the weekend at Tanganyika Packers grounds, Kawe Ward, Kinondoni Municipal Council, during the launch of the ‘Sauti ya Mtoto Live’ project.
The initiative is implemented by the Justice & Law of Children Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with the government. The project will run for one year across the four councils of the Dar es Salaam Region — Kigamboni, Ubungo, Kinondoni and Ilala.
“The government has made great strides in creating policies that support the growth and protection of children in all aspects. However, these efforts cannot succeed without the support of parents, guardians and the community. You must realise that the government depends heavily on you for the proper upbringing of our children,” he said.
Mr Mtambule acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by children across the country, including various forms of abuse and oppression.

“We are all witnesses to the different evils children endure. The government is fully aware and will continue to take firm action against those responsible,” he warned.
Highlighting government initiatives to improve children’s rights, he mentioned that education from preschool to Standard Seven is provided free of charge in public schools to ensure access to quality education. Many of these schools also offer meals to support the children’s wellbeing.
The DC said every school has established a gender desk, appointing one or two teachers responsible for handling cases related to sexual, physical and mental harassment. This measure is designed to make children feel safe and empowered to report abuse so appropriate actions can be taken.
Director of the Justice & Law of Children Foundation, Mr Fogasta Msula expressed gratitude to the government, through the Ministry of President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG), for its support in enabling the project’s launch.
He explained that the project aims to empower children to raise their voices for their rights through various platforms, including the media.
A total of 30 TV programmes will be aired throughout the project to raise awareness. As part of the project, primary school teachers across the four councils will receive training on the 2009 Child Act and the 2014 and 2024 Child Policies. This will equip teachers with detailed knowledge about children’s rights.
“Teachers spend the most time with children. By understanding these policies well, they will be better prepared to protect children from all forms of harassment,” Mr Msula said.
The event was attended by Kawe Ward Executive Officer Ms Husna Nondo, education officers, teachers, students, representatives from various NGOs and residents from across Dar es Salaam.
