Migiro named new Secretary General

DODOMA: THE ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi, through its National Executive Committee ( NEC) meeting held in Dodoma yesterday made a minor reshuffle to its Secretariat by appointing Dr Asha – Rose Migiro as its new Secretary General.

The former United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary General takes over the post from Ambassador Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, who was in January this year, endorsed by the party to represent CCM in the presidential race as president Samia Presidential running mate.

Dr Migiro, who served in various capacities in CCM, government and regional bodies, was appointed as UN Deputy Secretary General in 2007 by the then UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, a post she served until 2012.

The former UN Secretary General was quoted as saying that Dr Migiro is a highly respected leader who championed the cause of developing countries over the years, adding that through her distinguished service in diverse areas, she displayed outstanding management skills with wide experience and expertise in socio-economic affairs and development issues.

Dr Migiro served as minister in the Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs.

She obtained her LLB and LLM from the University of Dar es Salaam and her PhD in 1992 from the University of Konstanz in Germany. Before entering politics, she was a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

She headed the Department of Constitution and Administrative Law from 1992 to 1994 and the Department of Civil and Criminal Law from 1994 to 1997.

Recently, Dr Migiro fully participated in the preparation of Tanzania’s Vision 2050 (Dira 2050) and the collection of views from stakeholders on tax reforms.

Through its NEC meeting in Dodoma yesterday, the party also endorsed the current Arusha Regional Commissioner (RC) Kenani Kihongosi as its new Secretary for Ideology, Publicity and Training, replacing Mr Amos Makalla. Mr Kihongosi is a CCM cadre with integrity and unquestionable record of performance in the party.

Moreover, Mr Joshua Mirumbe has been appointed the new CCM’s Secretary for Finance and Economic Affairs. He replaces Dr George Haule who has been recently appointed Songwe Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS).

NEC has also endorsed the appointment of Khalid Mwinyi Said as the new Secretary General of CCM’s Youth Wing (UVCCM).

Before the appointment, Mr Said was serving as the UVCCM secretary for Katavi region. He replaces Jokate Mwegelo.
