First Lady: Youths are Zanzibar’s development driving force

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR First Lady, Mama Mariam Mwinyi, has called on young people to recognise their role the current driving force behind the nation’s development, not just as future leaders.
Opening the East Africa Youth Business and Investment Expo 2025 at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) in Unguja South on 10 August, Mama Mariam — who is also Patron and Chairperson of the Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation (ZMBF) — said the Isles are poised to become a regional hub for youth-driven innovation and investment.
She urged youth to seize opportunities by being prepared, disciplined and collaborative, stressing that growth is best achieved through shared effort.
“Zanzibar is ready to position itself as a leader in youth innovation, but it requires young people to be committed, adaptable and willing to learn,” she said.

Highlighting ZMBF’s work, she said the foundation has empowered 602 young people in the seaweed sector by providing motorised boats, training, drying facilities, savings and loan mobilisation and access to digital markets.
She assured that the Government remains committed to supporting innovative youth with access to capital, skills and opportunities to thrive in an inclusive and sustainable modern economy.
Meanwhile, at a separate meeting, Zanzibar’s Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr Mngereza Mzee Miraji, commended ZMBF for its multiple programmes that empower women and youth. He noted that such initiatives directly align with the Isles’ development agenda.
